Biography

Captain Raymond A. Sharpe, Jr. was born in Newton, North Carolina, attended public schools there, and graduated from Guilford College, Greensboro, NC with a B.A. degree in Economics

Captain Sharpe earned a Master of Science degree in Management at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, and is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.

Captain Sharpe is married to the former Harriett Miller of Conover, North Carolina. They reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia with their two daughters Suzy and Sandy.

Tours & Decorations

Following commissioning through the Officer Candidate School, he served aboard ships and staffs of both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. Shipboard division and department head assignments have included USS RHODES (DER 384), USS SARSFIELD (DD 837), and USS JOHN W. WEEKS (DD 701). He served as Executive officer, USS HARRY E. YARNELL (CG 17) and has commanded USS OUTAGAMIE COUNTY (LST 1073), USS CONSTANT (MSO 427), and USS CONOLLY (DD 979). He assumed command of USS SHENANDOAH (AD 44) on 26 April 1987.

Shore duty assignments have included Aide and Flag Lieutenant, Commander U.S. Forces, Japan; Bureau of Naval Personnel; Tactical Training Group, Atlantic; Commanding Officer, Fleet ASW Training Center, Atlantic; and Assistant Chief of Staff, Readiness, Training, and Tactics on the staff of Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. As a result of his shore assignments he has been designated a Joint Specialty Officer and Proven Subspecialist in Manpower Personnel Management, Operations Systems Technology – Antisubmarine Warfare, and Education and Training Management.

His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and Gold star in lieu of second award, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and various service and campaign medals.
